Tire care tips

As the mechanics at Morrison Automotive in Cambridge will tell you, keeping your tires in good shape is an essential part of maintaining your car.

Morrison Automotive is a locally-owned auto shop that has been in business for nearly 30 years. So, they have the experience to answer any of your questions and provide expert tire service.

The condition of your tires affects traction, safety and mileage. So use these tire care tips to ensure your tires are working properly:

Tires deteriorate even when they are not in use. An old tire has reduced traction, and is more likely to fail. That’s why you should never use tires that are more than 10 years old. Some manufacturers recommend replacing tires that are over six years old. Ask a Morrison Automotive mechanic for specific guidance regarding your tires.

To check the age of your tires, find the ID number on the sidewall that starts with the letters “DOT”. The last four digits of this number identify the week and year the tire was made.

If you have only two winter tires, they should always be installed in the rear. This configuration provides the best possible turning and braking stability, regardless of whether your car uses front, rear, or all-wheel drive. Some combinations of different tires are illegal, including the use of bias-ply tires on the rear with radial-ply tires on the front.

Extend the life of your tires by maintaining the correct air pressure, and rotating tires regularly.

Visit a professional auto shop to have your tires inspected.
